Times Tables Rock Stars was launched across the school a couple of weeks ago. Since the launch, Year 5 have thoroughly enjoyed the competitiveness and have been rocking away to the tunes in class.
On the 6th November a Battle of the Bands was set up so that Year 5 Lionfish and Year 5 Coral could compete and go head to head to take the trophy for Best Times Tables Rockers. The children were instantly excited (well in Year 5 Lionfish they were) and on the first evening it was a landslide victory for Year 5 Lionfish with a score of 1324 correct answers to Year 5 Coral’s 342. As the aim of the battle is to encourage the children to become more fluent with their times tables, I saw it as my duty (Mrs Thackway) to inform Mr Watkins the current situation. Feeling confident, Year 5 Lionfish skipped out of school humming ‘We are the Champions’ believing that the end victory was theirs. As the battle had been set for a full week, Year 5 Lionfish had obviously become a little complacent and arrived in school the next day to the bad news. To their horror, Year 5 Coral had made an incredible come back and were not in the lead and had almost double the score of Year 5 Lionfish. From that day onwards, both classes were battling it out and the scores were neck-in-neck for the forthcoming days. Both teachers and TAs were on the edge of their seats as they watched the lead change day by day.
On the final evening, the battle was due to conclude at 8:00pm. At 7:45 Coral were slightly in the lead and most thought the victory was theirs. However, some determined individuals in Year 5 Lionfish were hammering away on their keyboards in the last minutes and seconds and at 8:00 the winner was finally declared. Year 5 Lionfish had just pipped the post and managed to crawl into the lead with 38 more points than Year 5 Coral. The children were elated the next morning, especially the children that had logged in earlier in the day and had already admitted defeat. The final score stood at Lionfish 9270 points and Coral 9232.
