Welcome to Year 2 Penguins class webpage. My name is Miss Sharp and I have the pleasure of teaching your children this year alongside my teaching assistant Mrs Renfrew. In Year 2 we aim to make our learning fun and exciting! We will work together to ensure that all children reach their full potential and make good progress. We are looking forward to watching your child progress throughout the year and will prepare them for their transition into Key Stage 2. We want to keep you informed and up-to-date with what is going on in our classroom so if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask. You can contact me through the Class Dojo app or by appointment made through the office. You can support us at home by reading with your child daily and making sure homework is completed. Homework
In Year 2 our homework will be as follows:
· Spelling Record Book (with weekly spellings) – look, cover, write
· Handwriting
· A fine motor skills activity
· Maths workbook (one or two pages- to be decided by the teacher weekly)
· Daily reading
Reading and Phonics
Reading forms an essential part of the KS1 curriculum and phonics is a strategy used to help pupils develop their reading skills. We will be completing lots of guided reading and whole class reading in Year 2, as well as reading comprehensions to develop our understanding of texts.
Reading at home should be done daily, with two books being sent home weekly that focus on decoding words and developing pace and fluency. The comprehension questions at the back of the book should be verbally completed with an adult. From time to time, pupils may need to keep a book for longer to help them to consolidate their reading or comprehension skills. Parents should comment in their child’s planner so we know they have read at home. Reading books and planners should be in school every day.
Below is some information about phonics for parents and some links to phonics games. Further information can be found on the school's phonics page. Phonics screening assessments will be repeated for children who did not pass the screening test in Year 1.
