Welcome to our Governing Board

At Boarshaw Primary School, our Governing Board works in partnership with the Headteacher and senior leaders to make sure that every child receives the best possible education. In keeping with our school vision, ‘Every Moment Matters’, governors help to ensure that the school remains safe, inclusive, ambitious and focused on improving outcomes for all pupils.

The Governing Board is the school’s strategic decision-making and accountable body. Governors do not manage the school on a day-to-day basis; that is the responsibility of the Headteacher and staff. Instead, the board provides strategic leadership, constructive challenge and support, and checks that the school is using its resources effectively and meeting its statutory duties.

Our governors bring a range of skills, professional experience and knowledge of the local community. They visit school, receive reports from leaders, scrutinise information about pupils’ achievement, attendance and wellbeing, oversee finance and safeguarding, and ask questions about the impact of the school’s work - particularly for pupils who may be disadvantaged, vulnerable or have special educational needs and disabilities.

The board also values the views of pupils, parents, staff and the wider community. Boarshaw’s collaborative work through PiraMidd reflects our commitment to working beyond our own school to strengthen opportunities, support leadership and improve outcomes for children across the local area.

What the Governing Board does

In line with the School Governance (Roles, Procedures and Allowances) (England) Regulations 2013 and current Department for Education guidance, the Governing Board’s core functions are to:

  • ensure that the vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school are clearly defined;

  • hold the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and for the effective performance management of staff;

  • oversee the sound, proper and effective use of the school’s financial resources;

  • provide strategic oversight of safeguarding and make sure pupil safety underpins the school’s culture and practice; and

  • monitor school improvement, risk, compliance and the effectiveness of governance itself.

Governors keep the school’s self-evaluation and improvement priorities under review. Their work is closely connected to the areas that matter most to our pupils and families, including:

  • safeguarding and pupil welfare

  • attendance and readiness to learn

  • reading, writing and the wider curriculum

  • SEND, inclusion and the school’s specialist provision

  • behaviour, relationships and personal development

  • pupil premium and outcomes for disadvantaged pupils

  • financial health, staffing and effective use of resources

  • partnership working, including PiraMidd

  • premises, digital infrastructure, health and safety and sustainability

How governors work

The full Governing Board meets at least once each term. Committees and panels meet as required to consider delegated areas of work and specific matters.

Governors receive information from school leaders, scrutinise reports and data, visit school to deepen their understanding, and record challenge, discussion and decisions through formal minutes.

Governors are expected to undertake induction and ongoing training, including safeguarding, Prevent and online safety training relevant to their role. They must act with integrity, objectivity and honesty, in the best interests of the school, and declare and appropriately manage any conflicts of interest.
