Year 5 had a great afternoon visiting the local allotment. They explored the different plots and discussed the many fruits and vegetables growing in green houses, polytunnels and different structures. The children had prepared questions for the owner of the allotment and they showed great interest in what she had to say.
Luckily, the children were able to observe a range of different plots where some had been made out of recycled materials. The children enjoyed experiencing the warmth of a greenhouse made almost solely out of plastic bottles.
Intrigued by the different bug houses, the children went for a closer look. They were, for some reason, surprised by the amount of bugs they could see. They soon made a quick exit away from the bug house!
Currently, the allotment is growing a range of fruit and vegetables such as: rhubarb, courgettes, butternut squash, strawberries and many more. We plan to return at the end of the topic to see how they have progressed.
Over the next couple of weeks we are going to be growing our own vegetables and making tasty meals from some of the vegetables they are growing at the allotment.
