Global Goals
As part of ‘The World’s Largest Lesson’, Year 5 took part in a language treasure hunt. To begin, we discussed how difficult it would be to go and live in a country where they did not speak English. The children practised communicating using only actions. This was not as simple as the children first thought.
Meanwhile, Zuzanna, Nasrulla and Daniel were completing a secret mission. They had agreed to not speak in English for the whole task and instead only answer in their first language. They were busy writing everyday signs in their language ready for the next activity.
The children had to complete everyday tasks such as, go to the library and go to the shops and buy a loaf of bread. Zuzanna, Nasrullah and Daniel had placed signs around the classroom in Polish, Arabic and Chinese.
The children set off on their task and it proved to be very difficult. They tried to communicate with the children and some used search engines to translate words. Some made it to their destination and completed the task, but not with ease.
Once the task was over, the children were vocal about how difficult it was to complete the task and all were in agreement that it must be very difficult for children who have to leave their homes to live in a country where their language is not spoken.
Both the children and adults agreed how fantastic it would be to be able to speak a different language and Zuzanna, Nasrullah and Daniel were proud to talk about when they use their home language.
