We had an informative, interactive day learning all about Fairtrade and what it means to support farmers/workers fairly across the globe. The children created replica Fairtrade produce from play dough and placed them on a world map. We then discussed where the different items come from and which countries provide lots of different things that we use every day (like bananas and tea bags!) This helped the children to realise how far food travels around the globe and why sometimes it is easy to forget the working conditions of the people responsible for growing/making them. The children also worked on their own Fairtrade information leaflets including recipes for delicious treats made using only Fairtrade ingredients. We discussed sustainable farming as part of a circle time activity and also created some eye catching chocolate bar wrappers. This was in attempt to make Fairtrade items more appealing to customers on the supermarket shelves.
