Year 5 Coral Win dramatic Olympic battle against Year 5 Lionfish

The Oxford dictionary lists the meaning of the word defeat a follows; win a victory over (someone) in a battle or other contest; overcome or beat. On a fine late autumn afternoon it was Year 5 Lionfish who experienced the bitter taste of defeat. Still smarting for the controversial loss in battle of the bands Year 5 Coral had all the motivation they needed to inflict revenge upon their rivals. As always revenge is a dish best served cold and in the sub-arctic conditions that graced the Boarshaw playing fields Year 5 Coral emerged from the ashes of defeat like a phoenix from the flames.

Our brave warriors of year 5 were to prove their mettle over a range of challenges with tested both their body and the mind. The first event was the relay race where pupils’ has to complete a 30 metre shuttle run twice. Thanks to the keen eyed officiating of Mr Watkins, Year 5 Lionfish’s outrageous attempts at cheating (passing the baton on early) were spotted allowing Coral to run out easy winners. Next, came the discus and javelin and thanks to some humongous throws from Frankie Smith Coral managed to score another win, albeit by a narrow margin. Our fourth challenge was the high jump, where thanks to an inventive interpretation of the rules, saw Lionfish score a narrow victory. A big mention should be made of Thomas from Lionfish who despite the treacherous conditions managed to clear the bar at the highest setting.

However on the final event of the long jump Coral, ultimately proved their sporting superiority. In every contest there is a defining moment when one person steps up the plate and displays their true character. As the scores stood at 500 each Louis Lee stepped onto the sacred arena and wrote himself into the history books of class Coral. Returning from a comfort break Louis was faced with daunting task of completing the victory. An expectant hush descended on playing fields as he stepped up to the long jump launch pad and propelled himself into folklore. His total of eight points from his two jumps was enough to ensure the Boarshaw Year 5 Community trophy went to Year 5 Coral. It was evident that Miss Thackway was unable to inspire her troops to the same extent as Mr Watkins had. This ability to inspire his brave sporting warriors allowed Louis to do what all elite sport people do when faced with adversity. He managed to find that extra percentage point of effort to ensure that revenge was gained for the loss in battle of the bands.
