This half term, year 2 are learning about their new topic The Scented Garden. The main aims of the topic are to dveelop understanding of plants and how they grow.
The topic began with a memeorable experience. We recieved an exciting package from a comapny called 'Sow and Grow'. The package included soil, seeds, pots and a weekly recording chart. So as a class we staretd to plant the seeds. Some children planted runner beans, cress and carrots.
The children were very careful with the seeds and noticed that they were all different shapes and sizes. We worked with a partner to plant the seeds. The children decided the best place in our classroom to place the seeds would be on the window sill because the plants would recieve warmth and sunlight. We will be keeping a record of our plants growth each week using our recording chart. This will then be converted into a graph.
As part of our new topic we have been learing how to label a plant and discuss what the plant needs to grow. We have been learning about Sunflowers and their life cycles. We have learnt lots of intereting facts in science about plants.
In English we have been reading the traditional tale 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. The children have been learning how to describe characters and settings. We have been able to retell the story in our own words and create our own versions of the story. The children will continue this week to learn about the story. Then next week we will be moving onto non-fiction texts about plants and flowers.
